Truckin'
Life – August 2003
Supertruck
Racing made a welcome return to South Australia's Mallala Motorsport Park
on 31st May - 1 June 2003.
During
race one, Rodney Crick was pushed all the way by Luke Sieders driving
the MAN and the CAT Volvo of Bob 'the builder' Middleton, with less than
two seconds covering the trio at the line after the eight-lap journey.
Frank
Amoroso was like a bull at a gate at the start of the reverse grid second
race, passing six trucks to take over the front running on the opening
lap. He drove the wheels of his slightly under-horsepowered machine to
hold on, and spent most of each lap sideways or partly on the grass.
Crick,
Sieders, Butwell and Middleton were all over the rear of the number 96
FATE Racing Kenworth but were unable to find a way past.
The
red flag came out when Butwell's Scania split a fuel housing, causing
him to spin on his own diesel and block the entire track at the Northern
hairpin.
The
Super Prix again provided intense racing with Amoroso, Sieders, Crick
and Middleton all engaged in a battle up front. Amoroso's chances of victory
went out the window when a turbo let go leaving a three-way tussle for
the run to the chequered.
A
split drum brake for Crick caused him to make contact with Sieders – this
allowed Middleton through for a last lap pass for the victory. Sieders
and Crick filled the minor positions.
Overall
points: Crick 45, Sieders 42, Middleton 38, Butwell 30, Amoroso 26, Coulter
16, Andrews 14.
